Masterclass: Tax Research (6 CPE/CE*)

Effective tax research is critical for enrolled agents and certified public accountants engaged in tax preparation, tax planning, and tax controversy representation. Masterclass: Tax Research curriculum is designed to enhance these skills that allow you to be a better tax professional by covering the entire research process from start to finish. Homework will be assigned and is a required component of this class.

To earn full credit for this masterclass, be sure your schedule allows you to attend all classes and complete the homework assignment (projected to take 2-3 hours) in this timeframe.

Session I - AUTHORITY: 8/6 2:00-3:40 pm ET + optional Q&A (2 CPE/CE hours)

In the first session, we discuss the legal and ethical reasons why tax research is an essential skill. We delve into what the actual tax authorities are and how to read them, and the usefulness of non-authoritative sources is discussed. We also review the standards used in tax research, such as reasonable basis and substantial authority, and why they matter in the tax research process. Homework is assigned to provide students with hands-on research experience.

Session II - APPLICATION: 8/8 2:00-4:30 pm ET + optional Q&A (3 CPE/CE hours)

The focus of this interactive session is using a standardized tax research process to locate tax authority, apply that authority to a set of facts, and determine the best tax return position. The use of free and paid research tools to find and analyze tax authority, including artificial intelligence (AI) is reviewed.

8/13 Homework assignment due.

Session III - ANALYSIS: 8/15 2:00-2:50 pm ET + optional Q&A (1 CPE/CE hour)

The Masterclass concludes with analysis of the homework assignment and a demonstration of various ways the research can be documented and used.
